Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Vrat ki Raw Banana sabji is a simple stir fry made with raw bananas and basic spices.

This raw banana sabji is a no-onion, no-garlic recipe, like all the recipes on this blog. You can have this sabji during religious fasts like Ekadashi, Shivratri, Navratri, Pradosh Vrat, Poornima Vrat, etc.

Raw banana sabji goes well with fasting flatbreads like Rajgira paratha, kuttu poori and singhara poori. It is a healthy and vegan side dish for your meal. This is a very easy and simple recipe that you can make in just a few minutes. You don’t need any fancy spices or preparation to make this stir-fry.

During religious fasts, there are certain rules about what food can be consumed. Certain spices, vegetables, pulses and grains are not allowed. Only some millets and fasting flours can be used. Basically, only sattvic food is consumed during fasting.

Raw banana is a healthy option to include during fasting as it contains a good amount of resistant starch and fibre, which helps keep you full for longer. It also acts as a prebiotic and may support healthy digestion. Raw banana is also rich in potassium, which is good for heart health.

You can enjoy this sabji whether you are fasting or not. Serve it with regular wheat roti or poori along with some dal or curry. It also pairs well with parathas and makes a good option for a tiffin box. You can pack it with parathas and some curd for a simple and wholesome meal.

Ingredients Needed To Make Raw Banana Sabji

  • Raw Banana – Choose fresh, firm, and similar-sized raw bananas of the cooking variety.
  • Spices – Rock salt, pepper powder, mango powder, cumin seeds, and carom seeds.
  • Herbs – Green chilies and fresh coriander. Both are optional; you can skip them if you don’t use them during fasting.
  • Oil – Use peanut oil or ghee for tempering.

How To Make Raw Banana Stir Fry

There are two ways to make this stir fry.

Method 1 – With Raw Banana

  • Peel the bananas using a potato peeler and cut them into round slices or cubes, as per your preference.
  • Heat ghee or oil in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add cumin seeds, carom seeds, green chillies, and asafoetida.
  • Now add the banana slices and salt. Mix well, cover, and cook until the bananas become soft. Keep stirring in between.
  • When the bananas become soft, add pepper powder and mango powder and mix well. You can use lemon juice instead of mango powder.
  • Now add some fresh coriander, mix well and switch off the heat.
  • Enjoy with any vrat ki poori or paratha.
  • Method 2 – With Boiled Banana

    1. Add the bananas to a pressure cooker with a glass of water and pressure cook until they become soft.
    2. Peel the boiled bananas and cut them into round slices or cubes.
    3. Heat ghee or oil in a heavy-bottomed pan and add cumin seeds, carom seeds, green chilies and asafoetida.
    4. Now add the banana slices and salt, mix well, cover and cook for around 2 minutes, stirring in between.
    5. Now add pepper powder and mango powder and mix well. Instead of mango powder, you can use lemon juice.
    6. Add some fresh coriander, mix well and switch off the heat.
    7. Enjoy with any vrat ki poori or paratha.
