South Indian Flaxseed Podi (Flaxseed Spice Powder) – A Healthy & Nutritious Spice Mix

Flaxseed Podi is a healthy, nutritious, and flavorful South Indian spice powder made with roasted flaxseeds, lentils, and aromatic spices. This protein-rich and fiber-rich podi is an easy and delicious way to incorporate the nutritional benefits of flaxseeds into  your daily diet. This nutty and spicy podi pairs perfectly with dosa, idli, steamed rice, chapati, and many other dishes.

Why You Should Include Flaxseeds in Your Diet

Flaxseeds are one of the most nutritious superfoods, packed with omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, antioxidants, lignans, and B vitamins. They offer numerous health benefits, including:

  • Support heart health.
  • Help improve digestion.
  • May help lower cholesterol levels.
  • Rich in antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals.
  • High in lignans, plant compounds that may help reduce the risk of certain cancers.A good source of plant-based protein and essential nutrients.

To get the maximum health benefits from flaxseeds, they should be consumed in ground form. Whole flaxseeds are difficult for the body to digest, which means many of their nutrients pass through without being fully absorbed. I usually grind flaxseeds and add them to chapati dough, dosa batter, smoothies, yogurt, and other everyday recipes.

Why You’ll Love This Flaxseed Podi

This Flaxseed Podi is one of the easiest and tastiest ways to enjoy flaxseeds every day. It has a delicious nutty flavor with just the right amount of spice, making it incredibly versatile.

Serve it with:

  • Dosa
  • Idli
  • Steamed rice with ghee or sesame oil
  • Chapati or paratha
  • Curd rice
  • Salad

You can also sprinkle it over raita, mix it into chutneys, or use it as a seasoning for roasted vegetables and salads.

What Makes This Recipe Special?

To make this Flaxseed Podi even more nutritious and flavorful, I have added roasted lentils, herbs, and aromatic spices. These ingredients enhance the taste, texture, and nutritional value of the podi while giving it an authentic South Indian flavor.

The recipe is easy to customize according to your taste. Some people like to add roasted peanuts for extra richness, but I prefer making this version without peanuts. You can also adjust the quantity of red chilies, tamarind and jaggery  to suit your taste and spice preference.

This homemade Flaxseed Podi is flavorful, protein-rich, naturally vegan, gluten-free, and perfect for everyday meals.

How To Make Flaxseed Podi

  • Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a pan. Add both the lentils and roast them over low heat until they turn golden brown and fragrant. Transfer them to a plate.
  • In the same pan, add the flaxseeds and dry roast them over low heat until they begin to crackle. Remove and transfer them to the same plate.
  • Add the sesame seeds to the pan and roast them. Then add the cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and fenugreek seeds, and continue roasting until they become aromatic. Transfer everything to the plate.
  • Heat ½ teaspoon of oil in the pan. Break the dried red chilies into small pieces and roast them along with the tamarind until the chilies become crisp and slightly darker in color. Remove and transfer them to the plate.
  • Add a few drops of oil to the pan. Add the curry leaves and moringa leaves, and sauté over low heat until they become completely dry and crisp. Remove from the pan and allow all the roasted ingredients to cool completely.
  • Do not over-roast any of the ingredients, as they can develop a bitter taste.
  • Once the ingredients have cooled, transfer them to a mixer jar. Add the jaggery and salt, then grind everything into a coarse powder.
  • Store the prepared podi in an airtight container and use it as needed. It pairs perfectly with steamed rice, idli, dosa, or chapati.

Storage Tips

This podi has a long shelf life and can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container. However, if you’ve prepared a large batch, it’s best to refrigerate it to preserve its freshness, aroma, and flavor for longer. Always use a clean, dry spoon to maintain its quality and extend its shelf life.
