Ganesh Chaturthi – A Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Ganpatiji
Ganesh Chaturthi is a vibrant 10-day Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the deity of prosperity, happiness, and the remover of obstacles in life.
Devotees bring a clay idol of Lord Ganesha into their homes or set it up in community pandals. The priest or family members perform daily pooja and aarti of the idol. Prasad is distributed among the devotees and visitors. Sweets like ladoo, modak, and kheer are offered as naivedya and then distributed to everyone present during the aarti.
On the 10th day, the idol is taken for visarjan , mostly in a chariot with a procession of loud music and dancing. The idol is then immersed in water with heavy hearts. This symbolizes the return of Lord Ganesha to His abode on Mount Kailash. The same ritual is repeated again the following year.
For Ganesh Chaturthi prasad, all food items are cooked without onion and garlic and with fresh ingredients. Nothing that has already been used or consumed should be offered. Only freshly cooked or freshly prepared food should be offered as prasad. Stale, old, refrigerated, or previously consumed food should not be used for prasad.
In each state of India, the list and variety of bhog offered during Ganpati Utsav is different. Ladoo and modak are a must for Ganpati prasad, while the rest can be prepared according to your family traditions.
I have posted a few ladoo, halwa, kheer, and modak recipes on my blog. All the curry and vegetable recipes on my blog are also without onion and garlic, so you can try them for Ganesh Chaturthi as well.
